1.Role of layers

Learn about the role and usefulness of layers.

• Layers contain the images, text, or objects that make up a layered file. It allows you to move, modify and manipulate the contents of a layer, without touching that of others.
• Layers are stacked in the layers panel, which is usually in the lower-right part of the work area. If this panel is not visible, choose window > layers.
• In the Layers panel, click the Eye icon to the left of a layer to hide its contents. Click this icon again to re-display the content. It’s a very convenient way to remember the content of a layer.
• To edit a layer, you must first select it. To do this, click once to the right of the name of the layer concerned in the layers panel. To add more layers to your selection, press Ctrl (Windows) or CMD (Mac OS).

2.Basic principles of how layers work

Change the order of layers, adjust their opacity, create a layer, and delete one.

• In the Layers panel, drag a layer up or down the stack to change the order of the objects in the image.
• Click the Create Layer icon at the bottom of the layers panel to create a new layer. This layer remains transparent as long as you don’t add anything to it.
• To rename a layer, double-click its name, and then type a new one. Press the Enter (Windows) or return (Mac OS) key.
• To change the opacity of a layer, select it in the Layers panel, and then drag the Opacity slider at the top of the panel to increase or decrease the transparency of the layer.
• To delete a layer, select it in the Layers panel, then press the SPACEBAR (Windows) or the DELETE key. (Mac OS).

3.Resizing a layer

Resize the contents of the selected layers.

• In the Layers panel, select one or more layers that contain images or objects to resize.
• Choose Edit > Manual Transformation. A transform border appears around the contents of the selected layers. Hold down the SHIFT key to avoid distorting the content, and then drag an angle or edge until you get the size you want. Drag the pointer inside the transform frame to move the content into the image. Drag it outside the frame to rotate the content.
• Click the check mark in the Options bar, or press the ENTER (Windows) or return (Mac OS) key to validate the changes.

4.Adding images to a publication

Add more reducepicture to your publication Each of them will be placed on their own layer.

• Choose File > Import and embed, select an image in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac OS), and then click Import.
• To resize the added image, drag one of its angles by holding down the SHIFT key to avoid distorting it.
• Drag the pointer inside the frame to position the added image at the desired location.
• Click on the check mark in the options bar to validate the position of the image. A layer containing the added image is automatically created.

5.Unlock the background layer

• Because the background layer is locked, you cannot move it in the document window or in the Layers panel. You can not make some changes either.
• To convert the background layer to a classic layer, click the padlock to the right of its name in the layers panel.
